Performance/Tuning 2004
Here we come 2004. As you might noticed the configuration of the Sy remained the same this year, at least under the hood. The big project of the winter was the tranny rebuild with all the good stuff as you can see on my
Tranny page. The truck also received a multidisc converter with 2800 nominal stall speed. All these mods could some effect performance wise, but I'm not hopeing any drastic improvement this year.

After the required initial break in of the tranny, I have tried to find the performance of the last year. I had to deal with a bad ignition module, a loosy MAP connector and a bad starter. After I thought all these issues resolved, I have made a run last night. Cool weather, temperature is around 60F. Off idle run, no TC lockup, 17 psi.

As you can see the tranny, or to be more specific, the converter has some effect on the RPM of the truck. The RPM only drops like 500 RPM after the shifts, which are a bit harder than last year. On the other hand after the TC lock-up the RPM drops to around 3500 and I can really feel the power with my but after that. After the first check of the run I was concerned, whether this change in the shift pattern makes good or bad performance wise. Let's see.

Well. The best off idle run so far. Thanks to the new converter, I can get full boost much sooner, at around 4400 in 1st gear. Last year I was out of 1st before full boost. This faster spool up has a blessing effect on the short time and derived from this on the whole run. After this the truck performs very similar to last year, but the start made the difference. I like it...

I still don't dare to talk about a successful tranny rebuild, but this run was promising. If everything goes well I'll do a 20 psi run with power start and TC locked. This will need to see the complete story... Keep your fingers crossed please...

On a side note, if you remmember I was figthing against a chumpy idle and stalling problem the whole last year. I might find the culprit of this, but I need some time before I can say it solved for sure. Will report back on this one too.
