Performance/Tuning 2001

You might already got the idea, that I want to use my truck performance wise. If you want to make your ride faster you should be able to monitor the actual performance of car. So, one of the first thing that I collected shortly after buying my beauty was a diagnostic tool. In the SyTy world the only real alternative is Datamaster. There are other ways like Diacom for example, but DM is far the best bang for the money. Beside it can collect all the data from the ECM on your notebook it has a built in "Quoter Mile Time Estimator".

I started to use this tool to monitor the performance of my truck. As the name of the tool foreshadow you should advertise these times as your ETs, but it's consistent if you want to compare the runs of the same car. I always run the car on the same place, a deserted nearby road with a slight uphill, so hopefully recorded ETs don't cheat me too bad. Pls also keep in mind that I'm optimizing to the 1/8th not to the 1/4th, so some in some of the runs I let it off before 1/4th.

I made my first recording with DM in 4/11/2001 with one of my buddy in the car on a cool 10 Celsius evening (all factors which you should consider). The car is all stock and in the shape as she came from the dealer. What could I say? The pictures below say it all. It was terrible.

Engine and IC temps in the apocalyptic range, it's knocking like hell, it's lean, hectic boost, not enough electricity etc. It felt the same way too.

It'd be shame even if I dropped my turbo away. When I look back to this DM file I always wondering why my beauty doesn't fell apart long ago. Hopefully I'll be able to wondering for some time on this.

The first thing which I've done after some searching in the list archives and on the BB was to replace my plugs and wires. The plugs were AC Delco CR43TS (wrong type), the wires were damaged, cut in on several places. Unfortunately I didn't do my cap and rotor the same time which would have made sense and would have completed my ignition tuning. Anyway it made my next run much better.

2ndrun

Much better temperatures, though the outside was warmer, knock went down but still lean. The performance was much better too, but compared to that an average stock Sy should run around 8.5 in the 1/8th, I was still not so happy. The run was with my mother in law in the truck Wanted to scare her... ;-)

From this point I've replaced and repaired a bunch of things, some of them which I hadn't to. Several months later I could manage to make the following run.

3rdrun

Better temperatures, not so lean, not so good knock, wavy boost. My buddy in the car, however that was my first power start. The above runs and most of my recorded runs were from idle.

Near to the performance of a stock Sy. This is the point where the real tuning could start.

As you might see there are a bunch of change between the 2nd and 3rd runs. 160 Fahrenheit thermostat, Ultimate T1-15, repaired short cut around the VSS and several others which you can't see from the snapshot. AFPR, walbro 255L/hr intank fuel pump, replaced fuel filter, new vacuum lines with deleted CC and vacuum reservoir, rebuilt turbo (I'm not sure it was necessary), grounded Jabsco IC pump, rerouted IC lines, adjusted TV (bad, should shift a bit earlier), cap and rotor, tranny cooler with Derale deep pan and some new gauges like boost, tranny and motor oil temp, FP.

Since that run I've already made some other changes. I've an Aquamist 1s w/a injection system installed now. I've an EGT waiting for installation beside a DIY wb O2 kit. Hopefully that will help to make my goal till 9th of April, when I plan to start on the local track. My goal? Be as near to 8 in the 1/8th as possible.
