IC

Our intercooler is a Water-Air unit. Here come the main components and the modifications you could do on them. Upper heat exchanger, it's between the turbo and the throttle body. Not too much to do here. It's a Garret unit specially made for the SyTy's and not averrable any more. Some people are bell mouthing the turbo side with good result. Some others made their system a single pass, but I've not too much info here. There are also a larger unit for some $1k from ATR and others (the same unit under different logos), but I'd not suggest it. If you want to spend such money to the IC, get an air-to-air.

Beated old IC

Lower heat exchanger, it's below the front bumper, mounted in an angle. There are replacement units from Griffin and DeQuick, but I'd not suggest them. They are not cheap and won't help at all. IC pump. It's mounted on the back of the lower IC. A very popular mod to get a higher flow replacement pump. You can get a Jabsco unit from Ron or a similar unit from a Mercedes dealer. It was used in TD applications. The Mercedes PN is #0018351064. I bought it from Mercedes. I had to solder the original connector on it, but that's not a problem. It's working quite right.

Jabsco from Benz

Lines between the lower and upper IC's. The stock line are metal ones going around the upper intake. With time they become rusty and they collecting a lot of heats. I replaced them with ~12ft of 3/4" heater hose. I routed the hose in the passenger side fender and used some copper knees to eliminate the possibilities of kinks.

Metal vs rubber

IC scoop. The stock one is a piece of rubber mounted on the lower IC. I replaced this one with a larger aluminium one. You could also fabricate some sides for it to collect more air. There are a guys out there doing this mods from plastic garbage cans, and there are a commercial one to called "blade of death".

Beside this mods you can do something chipwise too. The stock chip is only turn on the IC pump around 180F intake temps. That's bad. So you can lower this temp in your chip (a constant), which Ultimate does btw. On the other hand you can hot wire the pump, so it will run all the time. You can do this buy 'T'-ing and ground the yellow wire at the IC relay on the passenger side firewall.

An other modification could be an aux intercooler mounted before the radiator serial with the lower IC. This mod is really cool. ;-) You can use a heat exchanger or a tranny cooler with 3/4" inputs and outputs. The stock IC system with the above mods could get a truck in the low 12's, maybe high 11's. We'll see...

If you want to go further, air-to-air is the way. There are a bunch of suppliers including KB, ATR, DeQuick (bad reputation here), Al Dustan. Some people even do their own, it's possible if you are good in welding.
